4+1 ART for passionate INDIE supporters
Dark fantasy, gore, (Lovecraftian) sci-fi, beauty, and the brain
“Strange flesh clung to humanoid form, its surface seeming to crawl almost imperceptibly, like the liquid that filled this place [...] They spoke to him, offering him the power to overcome his foe.”
quote from our narrative artbook - Omnimorphs: Beyond the veil
Welcome back, Traveler,
We set the mood with a Nethermorph artwork, because there are a couple of juicy dark indie stuff included in this week’s escapist treasure chest.
An artist with the deepest shadows, a promising nostalgic gore game development to support, and the indie version of Black Mirror / Love, Death + Robots all got a spotlight here. But if on International Workers' Day, you’d like to get down to work on something, you’ll find a suggestion from Jared, our Lore Master.
Do you have an indie project or an artist in mind that we should include next time? Share them with us by replying to this email or sending me a message. We will spread the word about cool indie art anyways…
Let’s observe out of curiosity and the love to learn or even mimic like Omnimorphs.
1. 🎨 Drawing: Micha Huigen
“This week I wanted to show you all an artist I recently found - thanks to Instagrams surprisingly good explore page. Micha Huigen is an illustrator from the Netherlands, whose style I can only describe as something that evokes a certain type of nostalgia and something I can easily imagine being a center piece on any wall as a print. I think it’s the pleasing colours, the rugged halftone textures or the full black he uses to shade things is what makes me feel this way. Also the interesting way he does the compositions and themes makes me pause and dive deeper into it to untangle all the details. Make sure to check out his profile, and give him a follow if you also feel inspired!“

2. 🎮 Gaming: Voin
“A really promising indie title I’ve discovered recently is Voin, a dark fantasy rogue-like FPS with lots of gore, fast-paced action, and beautiful Dark Souls-like environments rendered with awesome retro-3D graphics. What makes it all the more impressive is that it is said to be the work of a solo developer. It looks like a lot of potential fun for dark fantasy hack and slash aficionados. The game is currently under play testing with no release date announced yet.“

3. 📖 Book: The Brain that Changes Itself
“This is a brilliant piece of non-fiction that I have come back to countless times throughout the years. Written in 2007 by the psychiatrist Norman Doidge, I consider this the first work on neuroplasticity to find traction in popular culture. I first picked it up when I was 19 and was astounded by the misconceptions I had about the powerful piece of equipment I was housing between my ears. It spans a vast array of subjects over a relatively brief number of pages and covers some fascinating individuals. From a woman who designed exercises to heal her own learning disabilities to a man who helped his father recover from a massive stroke. This is a must read for anyone interested in the mind. The book is a testament to the vast potential we all have and our enormous ability to recover and change even after catastrophic injury.”

4. 🎥 Movie: A Thousand Suns sci-fi short story anthology
Before you click the link above, recall the last time you thought: “Wow, that was excitingly new!” about a sci-fi movie in the cinema. Was it long ago? Okay, Dune does not count, because their budget was a 100 times more than these guys’. And (hu)man, Macgregor and Blackmilk Studio deserve to be known better for it.
They’ve created 6 short stories that each should be extended into full-feature films, imho. These are not concept-quality shorts, but Hollywood level sci-fi movies. Watch all of them in this playlist, which also contains the making-ofs. Those I highly recommend, too, for aspiring filmmakers, because they explain how they managed to get the quality from such a limited budget in under 2 minutes. (spoiler: work)
This is the part where you recommend your favourite artist, developer, or maybe even yourself to us. A link is more than enough — we are introverts, too.
Time to escape to your world of creativity and build!
