The Fear-pervert’s List (11+3)
😱 11+3 art for nerds into stuff like Nosferatu
Welcome back, Traveller,
You just bought a pack of your favourite trading cards, it’s sealed and oh-so-shiny. What’s in it? Please, be a rare thing…
Scroll to open our imaginary pack of cards and enjoy these lesser-known gems from the internet’s nerdy side.
Here comes the collection that is based on the topic of our latest newsletter.
We explored
the “paradox of horror”;
why nerds love this genre;
and the benefits of scaring ourselves on purpose.
So if these points scratched your curiosity, there’s a link to our previous post at the end.
Let’s observe out of curiosity and the love to learn or even mimic like Omnimorphs.
🎨 Drawing: Lee Bermejo

“Horror is definitely not my favourite genre, and I think the ones I like are more because of the eeriness and uneasiness I feel (kind of like the disgusting theme from our previous newsletter). So I had to take this further and see if I can find any artists who makes me feel this way.
The first artist on my list is someone whom I got exposed to in my teenage years, when Joker was the coolest thing ever. (2008 when The Dark Knight was released) Around this time I found Lee Bermejo and the way he makes the Joker look disgusting, gritty and scary as hell, was quite a refreshing take from the more polished versions I was used to in cartoons. It’s a style I much prefer, and how I imagine Gotham City and its citizens to look and feel like.”

🎨 Drawing: Ivan Vujovic

“As I mentioned, I much prefer when there’s a hint of horror, I hate cheap jumpscares, unnecessary gore, but really enjoy when even with the environment they manage to make me feel a bit scared. This doesn’t even need to be Alien like planets or spaceships, it can just be an old abandoned shipyard, with fog and some snow where you can feel the coldness just by looking at the art. Kind of like how Ivan Vujovic managed to do with the illustration above. ”

🎮 Gaming: The Blood of Dawnwalker
“Lastly I would like to recommend a trailer that's a work of art from the beginning to the end. It’s inline with Nosferatu, some vampires and very cool horror elements. I don’t play as much nowadays, but will definitely consider picking this up when it’s out. Also keep an eye out at 1:29.”

🎮 Gaming: Inscryption

“Part rogue-like deckbuilder, part psychological horror escape room, Inscryption is an exciting mix of genres and a shiny indie gem from just a few years ago.”
Huba
🎮 Gaming: Amnesia: The Bunker

“The Amnesia series includes some of the best horror games, even beyond just the indie scene. Their most recent entry is set in a VW1 bunker — a beautifully dreadful setting for a truly terrifying horror adventure.“
Huba
🎮 Gaming: Sons of the Forest

“Sons of the Forest is a survival-horror game that places you in a cannibal-infested wilderness where you’ll craft supplies, build a base, and explore terrifying secrets above and below ground.”
Huba
🎮 Gaming: The Mortuary Assistant

“As the title suggests, you play the game as a mortuary assistant, going about your day-to-day, embalming corpses. However, things don’t go quite as planned, and you’ll find yourself doing things pretty far outside your job description, like uncovering jarring murder mysteries and exorcising demons.”

🎥 Animation: Mars Express
There aren’t many movies that I want to watch again right after the first time. This was one of those. I was amazed by the creativity of animation, dialogue, and storytelling of this sci-fi masterpiece. The artists managed to blend 3D and traditional French-Belgian comic styles in an excitingly fresh manner, adding elements of anime. I also love, how they mixed gore with sassy humour.
🎥 Movie: Control
A Hungarian crime thriller with fictitious elements. I am negatively biased when it comes to movies from my home country, my standards are way higher. But this I love more and more with every rewatch. The atmosphere reminds me of Max Payne’s underground scenes, while the music could be out of The Matrix. Do not expect oscar-winning acting, but the story and vibe definitely makes up for it.
🎥 Animation: Alice in Wonderland (Soviet version)
I’ve already yapped about Soviet animation. No wonder,
frequently posts notes featuring them. If you are tired of Disney’s idea of children’s stories, try out the Iron Curtain’s way. This was also created for children, but I still have chills when I think about the Cheshire Cat or the beheadings.🎥 Movie: On Body and Soul
I may go overboard with another Hungarian movie, but these really worth the watch. This is certainly not a horror, but fear and gore plays a huge part in the plot. For one, it's set in a slaughterhouse, and on the other hand, I think being scared of vulnerability is undoubtedly a fear for many. Unlike Control, the performances are great in my opinion.

Nosferatu: Why fall in love with your fears?
Horror was never my favourite. A mind full of fear-inducing ideas doesn’t need extra tips to freak out in the dark. But I somewhat get the craze. Every 3 months or so, I watch a Spawn episode or read a chapter from Neverwhere.
